Actress Sheila Hancock and crooner Craig David lead a star-studded New Year Honours list as more than 1,200 people are recognised for their contributions to public life.
The screen legend, 87, is made a Dame for her services to drama after a glittering career. Hancock, who began her career in theatre before becoming a screen stalwart, joked she felt “slightly miscast” on receiving the honour.
She quipped: “I’ve never felt myself this sort of person. It just doesn’t happen to people like me. “I feel I may be lowering the tone.” Honours also went to screenwriter Jed Mercurio, who receives an OBE after keeping the nation hooked with dramas Line of Duty and Bodyguard.
