A controversial 'bus gate' in Stockport is to be temporarily switched off whilst work on the town's new transport interchange is completed.

General traffic was banned from the stretch of Heaton Lane which runs between the A6 Wellington Road North and Travis Brow, last February with only buses, cyclists and licensed taxis now allowed through.

Cameras are in force with those passing through being fined £60, reduced to £30 if paid within 21 days. However today (Friday, September 29), Stockport Council have announced that traffic will be temporarily permitted to use it. However, from Monday, October 2, Astley Street is being closed to all traffic whilst final works on the interchange, due to open in Spring next year, are completed.
