Chris Whitty says the vaccine should still work on new coronavirus mutation

A new strain of coronavirus believed to driving the rapid spread in the south of England should still respond to the vaccine, England's Chief Medical Officer has said.

Professor Chris Whitty said it was too early to be worried about the new variant and insisted it would be "surprising - not impossible - but pretty surprising" if it could get around the vaccine.

He said new variants of the virus would always emerge and there was no evidence to suggest that this particular strain would be more deadly that what has been seen so far.
