Social distancing will need to continue for months to come, Chris Whitty has warned - as vaccinating the most vulnerable won’t be enough on its own to fight Covid.

England’s Chief Medical Officer warned people not to get too excited about rules being lifted all at once - despite a vaccination programme being under way.

Almost 140,000 people in the UK have been given the Pfizer jab in the first week and health chiefs hope to vaccinate all 20million of the most vulnerable in winter and spring.

Boris Johnson told today’s No10 pass conference he believed the “crossover point”, where restrictions can start to ease, will happen “between now and Easter”.
