Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta may be forced to hand in a transfer request to force through his move to join Barcelona, according to reports. The Spain international has one year remaining on his deal with the Blues but could be allowed to depart for free this summer, as his deal was only extended in April due to a clause in his contract.

While Chelsea are not expected to block his departure, it is believed the defender would have to make them aware of his desire to leave. However, Barcelona are reportedly growing impatient with the lack of progress and may encourage the Blues legend to ask for his deal to be terminated — freeing him to head to the Camp Nou.

The Sun claim the La Liga giants are threatening to move on to other targets if Azpilicueta does not find a solution soon.Head coach Xavi Hernandez is keen to have the 32-year-old available for pre-season training next month, following the release of veteran full-back Dani Alves earlier this week.Thomas Tuchel is due to meet with the right-back in the coming days to discuss his future, with Azpilicueta understood to be keen to return to his native country for the final years of his career after spending a decade in the Premier League.

But the German coach admitted back in May that he would be reluctant to lose the defender after Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left on free transfers.
