Over the past 18 months the Japanese international has had a successful loan spell at Dutch side Groningen in which he made 35 appearances for the club.
Postecoglou is well aware of Itakura from his days managing Japanese club Yokohama F Marinos, who are part of the City Football Group.
Itakura, 24, is reportedly high on a list of transfer targets drawn up by Postecoglou. The Celtic manager is also looking at other possibilities and is apparently closing in on a deal to sign Croatian defender Mario Vuskovic from Hajduk Split.
