Police were called to Hereford Road in Brinnington at around 5.15pm to reports of the disturbance breaking out in the street.
Residents reported that those involved were wearing balaclavas. Amid the escalating scenes, a car was then driven at a man before speeding off from the scene.
The victim, aged 62, was rushed to hospital for treatment with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
