Car and tanker crash on busy Scots road as police race to scene in heavy traffic

Emergency services raced to a busy Scots road this morning after a crash involving a car and a tanker. Police were called to the scene A71 near Moorfield roundabout in Ayrshire at around 7.50am after reports of the collision between there and the Bellfield Interchange.

Queues are stretching out past the on-ramp at Kilmarnock fire station causing major delays for motorists.Roads and traffic monitoring service Inrix said the collision involved a car and tanker.The report read: "A71 Westbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident, a tanker and a car involved between A77 (Bellfield Interchange) and B7064 (Moorfield roundabout). "Congestion to routes through Kilmarnock Road has been closed since just after 8am, affecting traffic heading towards Irvine." Reports on social media suggest the car was stuck underneath the tanker with emergency services being forced to cut the vehicle out.

One man tweeted Traffic Scotland saying: " @trafficscotland A71(W) from Kilmarnock RTA, car under back of tanker, cutting out involved avoid, A77 to crosshouse roundabout." A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "At around 7.50am this morning to a report of a road crash on the A71 at Kilmarnock near the Moorfield roundabout and they are still at the scene."
