Calls for Afghan refugees to be housed at former MoD base at Prestwick Airport

Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown has urged the UK government to use a former MoD site at Prestwick Airport to house Afghan refugees. Ms Brown believes the former HMS Gannet, which was decommissioned five years ago, could be an option to house refugees fleeing the Taliban in their former home country.

The SNP politician says the empty houses at the site could be used to accommodate Afghan families in South Ayrshire. The homes, which are mostly situated around Prestwick Airport, have remained empty since the helicopter search and rescue operation at HMS Gannet was decommissioned in 2016.
