My Aunt Marilyn (the same one who blessed me with the ) sat me down that evening and introduced me to a ritual all its own, consisting of a singed pressing comb over open fire, a vacuuming blitz of the house, and “sleeping pretty”—as in, sleeping on my stomach to avoid rolling onto my back and “ruining” my hair.
