Industrial towns face a “slow-motion traffic accident” for jobs and living standards without urgent Government action, a report will warn this week.

The study, seen exclusively by the Mirror and published on Thursday, looks at how the impact of industrial change has been handled in two sectors – steelmaking and coal-fired electricity generation.

The report highlights the devastation unleashed on Redcar, Teesside, by the closure of the SSI steelworks in 2015 – which triggered the Mirror's Save Our Steel campaign.

Some 4,000 workers lost their jobs but the Government response “showed limited preparedness” and demonstrated an “absence of learning from earlier experiences”, according to the study.
