A Romanian pensioner has become the world’s oldest man after Brit Bob Weighton died from cancer aged 112. Bob, 112, died from cancer on Thursday 28th May, his family confirmed "with great sadness".

Former teacher and engineer Bob, from Alton, Hampshire, took up the title in February after the death of previous holder Chitetsu Watanabe of Japan.

In a statement, his family described him as an "extraordinary man” and a "role model" who "lived his life interested in and engaged with all kinds of people from across the world." Mr Weighton's final birthday celebration on March 29 was held behind closed doors after the imposition of the Covid-19 lockdown, and he described how the "world is in a bit of a mess" with the crisis.
