The “Game of Crowns” author added: “Not only has Charles waited far longer than anyone else to ascend to the throne… he can also point to the example set by his mother, Queen Elizabeth.”Charles became king in September 2022 after his late mother died at the age of 96.:During an 18-month period in 2013 and 2014, there was a flurry of abdications,” Andersen added. “Seventy-five-year-old Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands handed the crown to her son Prince Willem-Alexander, 45.”He then explained how King Albert II of Belgium was 79 when he abdicated for his son Crown Prince Philippe, 53.
