Former Manchester United captain and previous holder of England's all-time top goalscorer record Wayne Rooney reportedly had to turn down the opportunity to present Harry Kane with the Golden Boot due to MLS commitments.
Rooney had previously held the record for the most goals scored for the Three Lions with 53 strikes to his name. However, on Thursday Tottenham Hotspur striker and United transfer target Kane surpassed that feat thanks to a penalty in the 2-1 victory over Italy in Euro 2024 qualifying.
Kane scored his 55th goal for his country against Ukraine at Wembley Stadium this weekend as the 29-year-old celebrated his achievement in style.
Pre-match, the Spurs man received the Golden Boot from FA chairwoman Debbie Hewitt but Rooney was asked if he wanted to perform the duty.
