Steven George Gerrard MBE (born 30 May 1980) is an English professional football manager and former player who manages Scottish Premiership club Rangers.

He spent the majority of his playing career as a central midfielder for Liverpool, with most of that time spent as club captain, as well as captaining the England national team. Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time,

Gerrard was awarded the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award in 2005, and the Ballon d'Or Bronze Award. In 2009, Zinedine Zidane and Pelé said that they considered Gerrard to be the best footballer in the world.

Stuart Pearce surprised the footballing back in 2005 by putting legendary goalkeeper David James outfield during the closing stages of a match against Middlesbrough.

Manchester City needed a win at home to the Teesside outfit to ensure they qualified for the UEFA Cup. With the clock ticking down and the score at 1-1, then-City boss Pearce opted against bringing striker Jon Macken off the bench.

Instead, he opted for James, who was brought out of goal and told to play as an attacker for the final minutes of the tie. Unfortunately, the shot-stopper couldn't make an impact - but the situation did give City players a laugh, reveals former star Shaun Wright-Phillips. "It was funny.
