good taste. Up until a certain age, no matter how you style-up your little ones, no questions are asked. Dresses with enough sequins to kit out the entire Rio Carnival, shoes that flash with every step and hair bows big enough to bonk-out hapless passers-by are just some of the style crimes I’ve personally committed – and they’ve not only been tolerated by my three victims, but welcomed with gratitude, love and appreciation.

Nothing I dressed them in would have made them falter from their one true core belief – mummy has cracking great taste. And, of course, it’s not only their own wardrobe curation they appreciate, but your own.

What mother hasn’t had chubby feet stuffed into their high heels, and tops dragged on the floor when fashioned as maxi dresses – or experienced the occasional panic when necklaces have been dangled, all at once, round a little neck.But slowly, foreign ideas manage to permeate those little brain cells and that concept of their parents’ style omni­potence erodes.

It begins with a refusal to wear that sequinned dress, then it’s a wrinkled nose at those fabulous heels they used to love strutting in and then… The “then” is the subject of this new fortnightly ­column.
