Netflix's latest documentary Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99 is airing today (August 3).The programme is exploring what went horribly wrong at the infamous 1999 Woodstock festival that saw three days of utter carnage.The word Woodstock is usually associated with peace, love and music as people recall the iconic 1969 festival that was held in New York.At a time of unrest and protest, Woodstock '69 gave people the opportunity to spread a message of unity and peace.The 1999 revival of the festival was supposed to emulate the same peaceful message, but instead it all went horribly wrong and ended up tarnishing the legacy of the legendary event.What happened instead was three days of rage, riots and looting as utter carnage broke out and attendees at the festival set dozens of fires.Here's what happened and how many people died during the violent festival.The first thing to go wrong at Woodstock '99 was the weather.Temperatures soared to 38 degrees and the festival was held on a former airstrip that had little shade.There was also limited grass space, which meant that many of the attendees were forced to camp on hot asphalt.The extreme heat was exacerbated by expensive vendors that were charging $4 (£3.3) for a bottle of water.

Many people hadn't been able to bring enough to sustain them through the hot weather safely.As well as this there were also issues with overcrowding.Reports of sexual violence were also rife, with six instances of rape being reported to the authorities.The various issues eventually saw the crowd growing more and more frustrated and the catalyst to the violent festival was vigil candles.During a Red Hot Chili Peppers set, peace promoters distributed candles for a vigil, but some of the festival goers decided.
