Manchester United announced in April that Ed Woodward would leave the club at the end of the calendar year. The announcement was seismic, especially because Woodward tendered his resignation amid backlash from the collapsed European Super League proposal in which United were leading perpetrators, alongside other American-owned Premier League clubs Liverpool and Arsenal.

Although the Manchester Evening News were informed in November that it was Woodward's intention to step down from his role as United's executive vice-chairman at the end of the season, his exit was brought forward after intense anger from fans.
