When Churchill declared May 8 a public holiday, 75 years ago, VE Day was celebrated with dancing, singing and partying in the street.
But now, under lockdown, the country is having to think of more novel ways to remember the anniversary. And there are plenty of ways that you can commemorate the occasion at home.
A two minute silence will be held at 11am, before a broadcast of Winston Churchill’s infamous victory speech will be aired at 3pm.
There’s also a singalong of Dame Vera Lynn’s wartime classic, We’ll Meet Again - scheduled to take place just after 9pm, following the Queen’s special address to the nation – with the chorus being led by Dame Vera Lynn herself, 103, from a window in her home in Sussex.
