The chilling video was captured by an observation camera near the Kennedy Center, and images from the footage show the huge explosion.
The small American Airlines aircraft, understood to be carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, fell to the Potomac River in the nation's capital just after 9pm local time.
It followed a collision with a US army Blackhawk helicopter, with three US Army soldiers on board, the BBC has reported. Fireboats were seen rushing to the scene, accompanied by vehicles carrying first responders and investigators from various agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).
