Households in many of England's major towns and cities are being warned that they could face fines of up to £300 for using their chimneys, and as much as £1,000 for burning unauthorised fuels.
Chimneys have seen a resurgence in popularity over recent years due to rising electricity costs. Many households are now turning back to traditional methods such as wood-burning stoves, open fires and fireplaces to keep warm during the winter months.
However, if you use the wrong fuel, you could be hit with a fine of up to £1,000. Instead, it is possible to use approved smokeless fuels that won't emit smoke from your chimney.
Smoke Control Areas, defined by local councils, prohibit the use of chimneys within their boundaries. This isn't just a limit on the amount of smoke you can produce from a chimney, but a complete ban on emitting any smoke at all.
