Vigil aired its first episode on Sunday night as viewers prepped themselves for the submarine thriller. The series follows the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler and a death on-board a Trident nuclear submarine sparking a face off with the Navy and British security services.

Line of Duty star Martin Compston, best known for his cop character DI Steve Arnott, appeared in the drama alongside Suranne Jones.

However, viewers of new BBC drama Vigil were left speechless after the Scottish actor's character died just eight minutes into the first episode.
