Victoria Beckham’s brand hasn’t turned a profit in more than a decade, but her problem has never been the backing of the fashion industry.
Yes, thirteen years ago, the mere idea of a former Spice Girl releasing a high-fashion collection was absurd - one magazine editor described her as a ‘pop star, and a badly dressed one at that’.
But then we saw the clothes, and they were, by and large, great. Well-cut and flattering, they had a clear aesthetic that borrowed something from Roland Mouret but felt more modern at the time, and before long praise poured in from all corners of the industry.
Certain editors even questioned whether the former Spice Girl had designed them herself – the ultimate compliment, even though it must have annoyed Beckham.
