A veteran who hoped to set a world record for living on a tiny remote islet off Scotland has been rescued in a 'Mayday' call by the Coastguard after being almost swept away.
Christopher "Cam" Cameron, an army veteran who served with the Gordon Highlanders, spent 32 days on the islet of Rockall, over 200 miles off the west coast of Scotland.
He had reached just over half of his 60-day target. However, he had to abandon his extreme challenge on Wednesday afternoon due to adverse weather overnight that made the isle dangerous.Cam’s equipment was destroyed by the wind and waves, and on several occasions overnight, he was almost swept away, the Rockhall expedition team said in a statement.An operation to rescue him by the Coastguard at Stornoway was launched when he declared a Mayday.
He was safely reached around 6pm.Harry Brayford, expedition communications and shoreside manager, said: “I spoke to Cam at 08:30 BST on Wednesday, and we discussed the forecast for the coming days.
