The football world paid its respects to Scotland legend Gordon McQueen today as he was laid to rest. Famous faces joined friends and loved ones to pay their respects at the service for the towering defender.

The 70-year-old - who was born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire, and made 30 appearances for Scotland - passed away earlier this month after a battle with dementia. His family believe the former centre half - who scored an iconic goal for his country against England at Wembley in 1977 - developed the syndrome due to heading the ball during his playing days.Daughter Hayley, a television presenter with Sky Sports, who has spoken out about his fight against dementia, was supported by friends and family.McQueen spent 13 of his 16 years as a pro playing in England and continued to live south of the border after retiring.

But his love for his homeland shone through at the service, which took place at St Mary's Cathedral, in Middlesbrough. His coffin was draped in a saltire with a wreath of thistles and one of his 30 Scotland caps placed on top.

In another nod to his love of Scotland, his hearse and coffin were piped to the cathedral. Former Scotland manager Gordon Strachan, who played with McQueen at Manchester United in the 1980s, was in attendance, as was former United teammate Bryan Robson.
