William Earl Variety and Pixel United will host the first-ever Leaders in Gaming & Entertainment Breakfast on Oct. 4. The in-person breakfast, held in Los Angeles, will bring together some of the biggest names in the gaming industry.

Marc Merrill, co-founder and president of games for Riot Games, and Shauna Spenley, president of Riot Games Entertainment, will participate in a keynote conversation, moderated by Andrew Wallenstein, president and chief media analyst of Variety Intelligence Platform, about the successful screen crossovers of Riot’s video games, such as their Emmy-winning animated series “Arcane: League of Legends.” Michael Lang, CEO of Pixel United, will be in conversation with Variety Co-Editor-in-Chief Cynthia Littleton about his vision for the mobile games industry, identifying opportunities for the wider entertainment industry to align with the passionate gaming community.

The breakfast will also feature the panel discussion Building a Franchise Through Gaming and Experiential Entertainment featuring Sean Shoptaw, senior VP of global games and experiences at The Walt Disney Company; Gio Hunt, VP of Oculus Studios for Meta; David Baronoff, founder and chief cross media officer for Bad Robot Games; and Helen Chiang, corporate VP of Minecraft Franchise.

South by Southwest Unveils First Round of Showcase Artists for 2023
Thania Garcia The South by Southwest Music Festival has revealed the first round of performers for its 37th annual celebration, taking over Austin, Texas, from March 13-18, 2023.  The full list of artists appears below, but highlights include South Korean artists Balming Tiger and Beenzino, Calle 13’s iLe (Puerto Rico), Ladaniva (France), Max Cooper (England), Mightmare, Núria Graham (Spain), the Orielles (England), Otoboke Beaver (Japan), RVG (Australia), Son Rompe Pera (Mexico) and dozens more. Like previous years, the festival will host multiple events spotlighting the 191 emerging talents on the list — with this being the first of several announcements for its planned showcases that will span six nights.

CAA Signs CNN’s Amara Walker
Brian Steinberg Senior TV Editor Amara Walker, the CNN correspondent newly assigned to co-anchor weekend mornings, will be represented by CAA. Walker, who joined CNN in 2012, works alongside co-anchor Boris Sanchez. The two also anchor CNN’s 10 a.m. hour on Saturdays. She is based in CNN’s Atlanta studio, and continues to also serve as a correspondent. The current “New Day” airs Saturdays between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and Sundays between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. CNN has announced plans to relaunch morning programming later this year and the weekend show’s name would, presumably, change as part of that move. Walker has reported on such events as the 2021 Atlanta spa massacre and co-hosted a primetime special with Anderson Cooper, Victor Blackwell, and Ana Cabrera, called “Afraid: Fear in America’s Communities of Color.” During the 2020 presidential election and the Georgia Senate runoff, Walker was part of an election night team reporting on President Trump’s repeated attacks against the Georgia Secretary of State, baselessly claiming fraud. Walker began her career at CNN as an anchor for CNN International, where she anchored during the ongoing humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela, and during large-scale demonstrations against a controversial extradition bill in Hong Kong in June 2019, among other events. She was live on the air as a fire ripped through Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in April 2019. Walker graduated magna cum laude with a dual degree in political science and broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California, and speaks conversational Korean and Spanish.

NBA Docuseries on 2023 Playoffs Coming From Fulwell 73 Productions (EXCLUSIVE)
Elizabeth Wagmeister Senior Correspondent Fulwell 73 Productions is teaming up with NBA Entertainment to produce a docuseries that will follow the 2023 basketball playoffs, Variety has learned exclusively. The 10-part docuseries, which is currently untitled, will soon be brought to market. The project is described as the “defining series on the league’s annual marquee event.” Fulwell 73 is behind “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” “Carpool Karaoke,” “The Kardashians,” the Grammy awards, the “Friends” reunion and Adele’s Emmy-winning CBS special, among others. The production company also has produced nearly a dozen sports docs, including Amazon’s “All or Nothing: Juventus,” which followed the Juventus football club in the Italian Premier League for the 2020-21 season, and the Netflix documentary “Sunderland ‘til I Die,” which chronicled the English club through the 2017-18 season.

The most prominent male actor in the film, Ben Whishaw, will be the only one campaigning for best supporting actor. Mara enters a very stacked lead actress race that includes Cate Blanchett (“Tár”), Viola Davis (“The Woman King”) and Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”). Her attorneys asserted to jurors that the director used his fame and position in Hollywood to pressure Breest, who was 26 at the time. “The defendant, Paul Haggis, is a famous movie director and screenwriter. He’s won two Oscars. He’s talented. He’s powerful. He’s also manipulative,” the plaintiff’s lawyer Zoe Salzman told the jurors in a Lower Manhattan courtroom. “The evidence in this case will show Mr. Haggis used his storytelling skills and fame to prey on, manipulate and attack vulnerable young women in the film industry.”

Daniel was a keynote speaker at Variety‘s Entertainment & Technology Summit at 1 Hotel in West Hollywood. “We’ve always had the focus internally about the variety of platforms that we have in [Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution], or the variety of experience touchpoints that we have across the Walt Disney Company with consumers –– that is no less of a priority now than it ever has been. And we tie these organizations together in a way that, again, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts,” he said.
