The US Capitol is on lockdown days before the inauguration due to a security threat. Rehearsals for the swearing in of Joe Biden have been evacuated, according to witnesses on the ground.

Videos of the Capitol seem to show smoke rising above the Washington DC building. A loud speaker system can be heard warning people of an 'external security threat'.

No one is currently allowed to enter or exit the building, where people are being forced to shelter inside. The city's fire department have said they were called to a fire beneath a bridge which is now out.

It may be that the evacuation was triggered by the smoke. The US capital has been on high alert since Donald Trump supporters raided the Congressional building on January 6.
