A treasure trove of “lost” Top of the Pops performances has emerged for sale thanks to a fan who recorded them. It was thought more than 150 iconic appearances by the likes of Elton John, Elvis Presley, Rod Stewart and Status Quo between 1971 and 1975 had gone for ever after the BBC junked a huge chunk of its archive.
The Beeb used to record over old film to save money before it was possible to transfer footage to video. But, luckily for pop history, one music fan was avidly taping the show using a Sony CV-2000, one of the first video recorders made for home use.
As a result he was able to compile a complete collection of performances on 34 cassettes. The tapes were acquired by a firm that specialises in the transfer of old recordings.
