It's the coldest May Bank Holiday ever as -5.9C was recorded this morning and 70mph gales are to come later today. The chilly conditions are expected to worsen with snow, heavy rain and strong winds to hit this afternoon and into this week.

The day off for many will be a washout with wintry conditions likely to continue for the next few days. Freezing temperatures hit many parts of the country with -5.9C recorded at Kinbrace in the Highlands in Scotland.

Met Office confirmed that made it exactly as cold as it was this time in 2012 - which was the coldest on record. Weather experts predict rainfall until tonight for most throughout the UK.
