Labour has called for cash payments for free school meals instead of food parcels or vouchers amid a fresh row over half term provision for struggling families.
Calls mounted for ministers to trust parents by giving them £15 a week to feed their kids after images of woeful food parcels sent to needy children prompted a furious backlash.
Shadow Education Secretary Kate Green said families should get the cash through the benefits system, allowing parents to get full value and to choose the right supplies for their children.
