Tragedy after person found dead on railway line

A person was found dead on a railway line near Greater Manchester. All services between Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent were suspended after emergency services were called to an incident at Congleton train station on Wednesday evening (January 22).

Officers from British Transport Police were called to the scene following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended and unfortunately a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers say the person's death is "not being treated as suspicious". The tragic incident caused a number of lines to be shut and is affecting Northern, Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry services.

Passengers faced delays of up to two hours with trains travelling to and from Manchester cancelled. A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “Officers were called to Congleton railway station at around 7pm yesterday (22 January) following reports of a casualty on the tracks. "Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
