Toddler undergoes major surgery after getting button battery lodged in her throat

A 10-month-old girl had to undergo major surgery to retrieve a battery she'd swallowed. Emily Neilan, 25, was looking after her daughter Mila at their home in Sydney on January 5.

While she was folding clothes, the curious toddler managed to open a bedside table drawer and take out a four-pack of button batteries and chew through the packaging.

In the brief moment her mum's back was turned, Mila swallowed one of the 20mm batteries before putting the packet back in the drawer and went on watching The Wiggles.

Ms Neilan soon noticed her daughter seemed "a bit tired" and refused her bottle, so she settled her down for her morning nap.
