The Cumbre Vieja, on the island of La Palma, erupted on Sunday after a week-long build-up of seismic activity that was closely monitored by authorities.

Pictures and video footage from the scene showed lava spilling downhill from the volcano and destroying several houses. Officials said around 5,000 people were evacuated and no injuries are expected.
