As the nights draw in and the days get shorter, it's important that we are getting enough of the nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy.That's where vitamin D comes in, the supplement both the NHS and the government recommend everyone in the UK should take during the winter months.

Vitamin D has a number of important functions and is needed to support bones, teeth and muscles. According to the NHS, a lack of vitamin D can lead to deformities such as rickets in children, and bone pain caused by a condition called osteomalacia in adults.

Our main source of vitamin D is sunlight. In Scotland and the rest of the UK, we only get enough of the right kind of sunlight for our bodies to make vitamin D between April and September.From October to March, we often need to rely on foods containing vitamin D to help us along, however, it's often difficult to get enough from diet alone.That's why government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during autumn and winter.Advice to take vitamin D supplements is based on recommendations from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) who provide independent advice to government based on scientific evidence.According to Public Health Scotland, everyone, including children, should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms (10μg) of vitamin D.However, people at high risk of not getting enough vitamin D, all children aged one to four, and all babies - unless they're having more than 500ml of infant formula a day - should take a daily supplement throughout the year.Senior Dietitian Victoria Taylor at the British Heart Foundation said: "It's recommended that everyone take a supplement containing 10 micrograms (10 μg, equivalent
