the Duchess no longer feels the need to adhere to Buckingham Palace’s strict dress codes. The rules and regulations the royals have to live under are renowned – colourful nail polish is, for example, frowned upon, as are bare legs and even black tights during royal engagements.

Skirts should always be below the knee and shoulders and upper arms should be covered at all times. Both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex have, over the years, worked to relax and modernise these rules on occasions.

The alleged disagreement between Kate and Meghan on the latter’s wedding day apparently occurred during a discussion around the young bridesmaids’ tights: Kate wanted to follow “protocol”, while Meghan wanted to do away with tights.
