A co-creator of The Umbrella Academy has responded to accusations that the show is anti-Semitic. The Netflix superhero series has come under fire for the use of the Yiddish language by the villainous character known as The Handler, played by Kate Walsh.
Yiddish is spoken almost exclusively by Ashkenazi Jews. The show's co-creator Steve Blackman has now responded to the criticism and he himself is Jewish and created the character of The Handler.
According to Metro, Blackman said: "While I understand audiences sometimes receive things in a different way than creators intend, The Handler was not created as an antisemitic character." He also denied that the organisation known as The Commission in the series is actually evil, saying that
