There were disturbing scenes in Southport last night as riots erupted after a peaceful vigil held for the victims of Monday’s brutal knife attack.
Police say they believe the riots were sparked by members of the English Defence League (EDL) - a far-right organisation known for its islamophobia.
It follows online rumours regarding the ‘status’ of the 17-year-old boy arrested on suspicion of murder. Yesterday, Merseyside Police issued a statement warning against ‘speculation’ and adding that a name circulating online in connection with the attack was ‘incorrect’.
They also said the suspect was born in Cardiff. A peaceful vigil was organised for residents of Southport to come together, mourn, and pay their respects to the three young girls who tragically lost their lives on Monday.
