Taylor Swift, Barbie and Hollywood strikers are among the nine contenders for Time’s 2023 Person of the Year, the magazine announced today.

Also up for the designation, in addition to various world figures, is Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. The annual selection chooses the individual, group, or concept that has had the most influence on the world throughout the previous 12 months.

The 2023 Person of the Year will be announced on Wednesday. The nine candidates were announced on NBC’s Today show this morning.

In considering the striking Hollywood writers and actors, Time said the workers displayed “a rare show of the power of both labor and the entertainment industry.” Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, Time said, “made clear the possibility for theatrical success remains even in a streaming world,” while Swift was noted for the re-release of her albums and “the highest-grossing global tour of all time.” Also on the shortlist is the “Trump Prosecutors,” Vladimir Putin and King Charles III.
