The CW is about to enter a new ownership era, as local TV giant Nexstar Media Group has confirmed a pending deal to acquire a 75% stake in the 16-year-old broadcast operation.

Nexstar, the largest TV station group, got a boost from midterm political ad spending as well as a rise in distribution and digital revenue in the second quarter.

The grappling begins in September: Women Of Wrestling, or WOW, will premiere nationwide in syndication during the weekend of Sept. 17. Available via Paramount Global Content Distribution, WOW is the only all-female wrestling organization with a global TV footprint.

Brian Steinberg Senior TV EditorAfter a long and much-publicized interruption, Chris Cuomo wants to get after it again.Cuomo, who made that phrase the mission statement for his 9 p.m. program on CNN, is taking his bulldog demeanor and lean-in anchoring style to NewsNation, the still-nascent news outlet backed by large station owner Nexstar Media, which has in recent months made a series of acquisitions aimed at bolstering its presence in the media sector.

CW chief Mark Pedowitz tried to put some context around an upcoming ownership shift of the network. It’s not a typical corporate deal, he said, because the CW is an important brand, and a well entrenched one.

In its biggest contraction ever, the CW’s DC Universe lost three series heading into next season with the cancellation of veteran Legends of Tomorrow as well as Batwoman, currently in Season 3, and freshman Naomi. It now consists of veteran The Flash, Superman & Lois and new entry Gotham Knights — all for midseason — as well as Stargirl (shared with HBO Max), which is the sole DC representative on the fall schedule.

Back when the CW launched in 2006 with the combined assets of the WB and UPN, it had five half-hour comedies on the air, the multi-camera Reba, Girlfriends, The Game and All of Us and single-camera Everybody Hates Chris. That genre quickly disappeared as the CW focused on the coming-of-age dramas and subsequently added superhero series for the slate that it is known for today.

Big broadcaster Tegna is in the home strength of a long and sometimes contentious change of ownership, announcing that its shareholders have approved a sale led by investment firm Standard General.
