Emmys telecast is riddled with surprise, out-of-left-field winners, and until the very last minute, this ceremony was not one of them. As the experts predicted, “Shōgun” pretty much ran the table, and it and “The Bear” both set records for the most awarded shows ever for a drama and a comedy, respectively.

A night of nostalgia, a Baby Reindeer sweep and incredible launching pad for the upcoming seasons of The Bear and Shōgun made up the 76th Annual Primetime Emmys.

Jennifer Maas TV Business Writer Dan and Eugene Levy took the stage at the top of the Emmys on Sunday night to kick off the awards show on ABC with jokes galore, including a roast of “The Bear.” The opening segment of the 76th annual Emmy awards saw the duo (who mark the first-ever father and son to host TV’s biggest night) playfully grill the FX on Hulu series (a Disney-owned show, and thus a prime target to get a jab when the Emmys are airing on Disney broadcaster ABC): “‘The Bear’ is nominated for 23 Emmys tonight, making it the most nominated comedy in history,” Eugene Levy said. “Now, I love the show, I love the show, and I know some of you will be expecting us to make a joke about whether ‘The Bear’ is really a comedy — but in the true spirit of ‘The Bear,’ we will not be making any jokes.” The jokes centering Disney properties didn’t end there, with the Levys noting that FX on Hulu’s “Shōgun” already took home 14 Emmys at last week’s Creative Arts awards show, making it the most-decorated show in a single season.

In what is already an Primetime Emmy Awards evening of several wins for FX’s second season of The Bear, Jeremy Allen White, aka top chef Carmy on the show, picked up his second Emmy win for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

Steve Zaillian garnered an Emmy Award on Sunday night for Outstanding Directing For A Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s Ripley.  In his speech, Zaillian mentioned being enamored by the beautiful landscapes that Italy provided, alongside being grateful for his cast and crew. “Making Ripley in Italy was its own reward. It was like a dream. I didn’t need anything after that,” the director said. “ The work is its own reward and I still really appreciate this honor though, and I share it with literally hundreds of people who worked on Ripley, the actors, Andrew [Scott], Dakota [Fanning], Elliot [Sumner], Johnny [Flynn], Maurizio [Lombardi], and all the other wonderful Italian actors, the producers, the incredible department heads and crew—all of ’em artists in their own right. I thank them. The Academy, Netflix and my family.”
