D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai brought a special message to the 2024 Emmy Awards on Sunday (September 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The 22-year-old Emmy-nominated actor arrived on the red carpet with a red hand painted across his mouth and there’s a special meaning behind it. Keep reading to find out more… The red handprint is a symbol for the MMIW movement – Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
It stands for “all of the missing sisters whose voices are not heard” and for “the silence of the media and law enforcement in the midst of this crisis,” according to Native Hope.
In March 2023, Auli’i Cravalho arrived at a premiere also bringing light to the movement. At tonight’s Emmys, D’Pharaoh is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on Reservation Dogs.
