? Sydney Sweeney, that’s who.The breakout is reportedly gearing up to star in a campy Barbarella reboot. Inspired by a comic book series written by French author Jean-Claude Forest in the early ’60s, the original movie, directed by Fonda’s then-husband Roger Vadim, has developed a cult following since flopping at the box office in 1968, with whispers of a reimagining first circulating in 2018 after Dynamite Entertainment reissued the comic.Paco Rabanne contributed to the wardrobe of the original 1968 film. It’s futile to attempt to distill Barbarella’s plot, but it sees its titular heroine (Fonda), a wide-eyed “astronavigatrix,” travel to faraway planets in the 41st century to retrieve “a positronic ray” from the villain Durand Durand, whom Earth’s inhabitants fear may use it to cause mass destruction.

Character-wise, Barbarella—whose experience of the world is all peace and love—is naive to the point of comic absurdity, particularly when it comes to sex (which humans have ditched in favor of “exaltation transference pellets” by the year 40,000).

One particularly famous scene from the movie: Barbarella’s experience of Durand Durand’s deathly excessive machine—meant to trigger heart-stopping orgasms in its victims. (Remember Cassie’s turn on the ferris wheel in Euphoria?)Anita Pallenberg starred as a villain in Barbarella. The Barbarella costumes, meanwhile, both leaned into mod ’60s trends and inspired countless designers after the film’s release, with the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and Nicolas Ghesquière explicitly nodding to Fonda’s wardrobe in various collections.

Paco Rabanne developed a space-age dress for the picture, while costume designer Jacques Fonteray took further cues from the French house’s runways.
