A prisoner at Strangeways has been taken to hospital having tested positive for coronavirus. It is the first confirmed case of the virus at the Category A, high-security men's prison, officially named as HMP Manchester.

No other staff or prisoners have tested positive, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) said today (Wednesday). But 13 prisoners have been put into isolation - and four staff were told to self-isolate - as a precaution.

No further details about the prisoner have been released. The MOJ said healthcare professionals are assessing on a case-by-case basis whether offenders should be treated in prison or be transfered to hospital.
