St Mirren captain Joe Shaughnessy admits Hamilton’s last-minute sucker punch stemmed from a defensive lapse in concentration.

But the dogged centre back insists his Buddies should have had their Premiership top six spot in the bag well before their crushing trip to the Fountain of Youth Stadium.

The Saints were just a minute plus stoppage time away from sealing three points that would have guaranteed they made the top half for the first time since 1985.

But a free-kick mix-up, stemming from a soft foul against Shaughnessy on David Moyo, saw Kyle Munro unmarked at the back post to slam home a crushing equaliser that - coupled with St Johnstone ’s late win over Ross County - saw St Mirren’s top six challenge go up in flames.
