St Johnstone skipper Liam Gordon celebrated from home when David Wotherspoon brought out the famous chop at World Cup

St Johnstone captain Liam Gordon says he jumped off his couch cheering when team-mate and fellow local David Wotherspoon pulled off a familiar piece of skill at the World Cup.

The ‘Spoony Chop’ has become a lethal part of the Perth midfielder’s armoury and he used it to great effect in the latter stages of Canada’s final group game against Morocco in Qatar.The neat move was successful (as always) and left opponent Achraf Hakimi – of French club Paris Saint-Germain – chasing his tail in recovery.And Gordon, a former Perth High School student like Wotherspoon, was lapping it up.

He told the Perthshire Advertiser: “I watched the Canada v Morocco game in the house and was looking through the subs to see if he would get on.“The rest of them were all young so will likely get another chance, so I had a feeling the manager would bring him on.“I was delighted for him when he got on the pitch and I was off the couch cheering when he did the Spoony Chop!“It was mental watching him do it on that stage. “It’s brilliant for him, he worked so hard to get back from his injury and it was touch-and-go whether he’d be going because the timescales were pretty tight. “But the manager told us he was going after the Motherwell game and it was brilliant for him to do that in front of all the boys.” Gordon himself has become a local role model with his cup-winning success and then being made captain of the team he grew up supporting.

He says kids across the region just need to look at Wotherspoon to see what can be achieved in the beautiful game.“It couldn’t have happened to a better guy, especially after what he’s been through in the last year or so,” he said.“He’s back with us now, he’s in great form for the games coming up."Gordon added:
