A ‘sophisticated’ thief who stole more than £30,000 of perfume for Manchester Airport’s duty free has been jailed for 18 months.
Marcel Sandu, 32, carried out four raids on the World Duty Free store in summer 2022 and July 2023. He was only snagged when a customs officer in Jersey noticed he was carrying 79 bottles of perfume in a hold-all.
He then challenged Sandu who assured the officer ‘he was given the perfume by another man having never been in trouble with the police before’.
However — one flaw in his story was that officers then found a prohibition order in the same bag, banning Sandu from Glasgow Airport.
