More than £100million was spent to bring Sancho and Raphael Varane to Old Trafford and many speculated that a defensive midfielder would soon follow, with West Ham's Declan Rice a key target.
The move for a midfielder failed to materialise and United ended up sealing a shock return for Ronaldo, arriving from Juventus for around £13m, bringing him back to the club where he made his name.
