Snow, high winds and lightning weather warning issued

People are being urged to take care as snow, high winds and lightning strikes are set to hit Renfrewshire in the next 24 hours.The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and lightning to hit much of Scotland, including Renfrewshire and East Renfrewshire.It is in place from 5pm this evening until 10pm on Thursday night.

Around three to seven centimetres of snow is expected at low levels, with higher levels of 10 to 20cm by Thursday morning.They have warned of power cuts which could affect mobile phone coverage and that rural communities may become cut off.There is also a small chance of injuries and danger to life from lightning strikes.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.The Met Office said: “Temperatures across Scotland and Northern Ireland are expected to drop sharply following a squally band of rain on Wednesday, with frequent heavy and blustery snow showers arriving from the Atlantic.“The showers will be accompanied by strong, blustery winds, with gusts of 45-55 mph possible, and a chance of 65 mph on coasts.

Blizzard conditions are likely over higher ground.“There is a small chance that some of the showers could be accompanied by frequent lightning, which could impact power supplies, including some places outside of the warning area.“Snow showers are increasingly likely to turn back to rain and sleet at low levels later Thursday morning and early afternoon, although remaining as snow above 200-300m.”The latest weather warning comes after Storm Franklin at the start of the week which saw high winds and rain hit the region.
