Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer considered quitting after a by-election defeat, a new book about the politician claims. A loss to the Tories in May 2021 meant the County Durham constituency turned blue for the first time since it was created in 1974.

But since then the party has rebounded, and has a huge lead in many opinion polls. Sir Keir is now tipped to become the next prime minister.
