Should homeless camp tents be removed from St Peter's Square? Have your say

A court has ruled a make-shift homeless camp in Manchester city centre must be removed. Manchester council has secured a 'possession order' against the people living in tents on St Peter's Square next to the town hall.

This means the council will effectively be able to evict those in the camp. What began as a protest, the 'red tent camp' set up last spring but soon turned into a long-term site where homeless people stayed.

But following the court ruling, the camp’s days now appear to be numbered. In April 2024, council officers offered more than 50 camp 'residents' a place in temporary accommodation in an effort to discourage the camp’s spread.

Shortly after, council and police officers sealed off the area under the arches and closed the camp down. More tents were erected next to the fences, which sealed off the first camp in October.
